Course Description

Overview

Explore the Pyroxene Hornfels Facies in this comprehensive 33-minute lecture from the Petrology course. Delve into the characteristic mineral features, mineralogical assemblages, and important reactions of this metamorphic facies. Examine the Oslo region in Norway as a case study and understand the physical conditions of metamorphism. Learn about the instability of muscovite and quartz, and the coexistence of cordierite and andalusite/sillimanite with K-feldspar. Discover the presence of wollastonite in calcic assemblages and the composition of silica-poor dolomitic marbles. Analyze the Fe2+/Mg ratio in almandine garnet and the significance of cordierite as the typical magnesian phase. Gain valuable insights into metamorphic petrology from Dr. Harel Thomas, Professor of Applied Geology at Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya.

Syllabus

Intro
PYROXENE HORNFELS FACIES
INTRODUCTION CHARACTERISTIC MINERAL FEATURES - MINERALOGICAL ASSEMBLAGE - IMPORTANT REACTION - OSLO REGION, NORWAY - PHYSICAL CONDITION OF METAMORPHISM - CONCLUSIONS
Albite-Epidote-Hornfels Facies 2. Hornblende-Hornfels Facies 3. Pyroxene-Hornfels Facies 4. Sanidinite Facies
Muscovite + Quartz are no more stable and cordierite and andalusite/Sillimanite coexist with K-feldspar, biotite and almandine garnet are of restricted occurrence.
PYROXENE-HORNFELS FACIES CHARACTERISTIC MINERAL FEATURES
Presence of wollastonite in calcic assemblages and of calcite-forsterite-periclase (MgO) and calcite-forsterite - diopside in silica-poor dolomitic marbles. 5 . Almandine garnet when present has a high Fe2+/Mg ratio compared with that of granulite facies assemblages. The typical magnesian phase is cordierite.
