Overview

The objective of this course is to introduce Cultural Discourse in Built Environment Theory, Research, Practice and Education. To build the foundation and re-orient the students to use systems thinking and through interdisciplinary methods for bringing under one umbrella together the scientific, ecological, technological, and political dimensions of the subject of culturally responsive Built Environments.INTENDED AUDIENCE:Students studying Architecture, Planning, Urban and rural studies and cultural studies, working with the R&D organizations and cultural industriesPREREQUISITES:B.Arch /B.Plan 2nd year (pursuing)INDUSTRY SUPPORT: Humanitarian and Non-Government Organizations Indian Heritage Cities Network, INTACH, UNESCO

Week 1 :Defining Theory and Concepts: Place and Space; Introduction to Vernacular Architecture: What is a Dwelling?
Week 2 :Dimensions of culturally responsive built environment; Winter Urbanism.
Week 3 : Power in Built Form
Week 4 : Culture Disasters and Risk
Week 5 :Conservation: Principles and practicesWeek 6 : Vernacular resources, materials and technology
Week 7 : Planning for culture; Cultural economies; Safeguarding intangible heritage
Week 8 :Social change in India; Culturally responsive built environment: Architectural education; Summarizing culturally responsive built environment
