Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States and globally and yet, CAD is preventable, specifically through the early detection and treatment of risk factors. Leading a healthy lifestyle can help lower patients’ risk for CAD, as can the appropriate use of evidence-based medications.

The Preventing Heart Disease XSeries program from the Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE) offers a practical approach to the prevention of initial and recurrent cardiac events by recognizing risk factors and treating them with lifestyle and medications, when necessary. Guided by expert cardiologist Dr. David Maron, you'll explore an integrated approach to patient care, including the theory of preventive cardiology and the application of evidence-based principles to real-world clinical practice. You’ll examine the impact of risk factors on CAD, and how a healthy lifestyle and medications, when needed, can reduce risk and eventual onset. Leave the program prepared with behavior change strategies and appropriate use of medications that will encourage patients to understand the value of preventive interventions in managing their risk factors.

In support of improving patient care, Stanford Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Syllabus

Courses under this program:
Course 1: Introduction to Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease

Learn how to recognize heart disease from experts at Stanford Medicine. Explore the impact of risk factors on coronary artery disease (CAD) and how improved lifestyle changes such as eating patterns, exercise, weight loss, and smoking cessation can lower that risk.

Course 2: Metabolic Risk Factors and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease

Gain a grounding in metabolic risk factors from experts at Stanford Medicine. Discover how metabolic risks can lead to coronary artery disease, and how you can recommend an appropriate treatment plan for these metabolic factors to achieve healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Course 3: Managing Coronary Artery Disease

Throughout this course from the Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE), you’ll discover a range of pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions for individuals at risk of heart disease. You’ll also learn how to improve patient engagement and outcomes.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) or heart disease is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, for both men and women. Yet, heart disease is largely preventable, specifically through the early detection and treatment of risk factors. Throughout this course from the Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE), you will learn how to recognize ASCVD risk factors and uncover some of the misconceptions relating to preventive cardiology, such as an underemphasis on lifestyle impact. You will begin to explore how lifestyle choices can lower the risk of coronary artery disease and learn how to apply appropriate methods to assess an individual's ASCVD risk.

Metabolic risks such as hypertension, lipid disorders and diabetes are the most common risk factors for coronary artery disease. In the US, hypertension is only becoming more common, as are elevated levels of the two lipoproteins responsible for heart disease causing cholesterol. Globally, the prevalence of diabetes has also more than doubled since 1990 and has recently been declared an epidemic by the World Health Organization. In this course from the Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE), you will learn how metabolic factors can affect an individual’s risk of coronary artery disease. You will also determine the diagnostic criteria for hypertension and lipid disorders, and examine how to assess a patient for diabetes.

Nonpharmacological interventions are important in managing the risks of coronary artery disease (CAD). These interventions include behavioral changes where at-risk individuals adopt healthier lifestyles. Pharmacological interventions have also proven to be effective methods of escalating the treatment of metabolic risks. Antihypertensive medications effectively reduce blood pressure, cardioprotective drugs reduce blood glucose, and statin and non-statin medications are effective at lowering lipoproteins. In this course from the Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE), you will consider various nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatment options for individuals who are at high risk of heart disease. You will also explore the knowledge, psychological, and socioeconomic barriers that impact an individual’s ability or desire to successfully implement behavioral changes for reducing their risk of CAD. This course will provide you with tools and strategies that both individuals and their healthcare providers can utilize to improve patient engagement and outcomes.
