Course Description

Overview

Textile Design Part 3 - Reducing Colours & Creating Colour Separations in Photoshop | Indexing | Screen Printing

In this course you will discover how Textile Designer, April Mawhinney, uses Adobe Photoshop to reduce the number of colours used in a watercolour placement print, and prepare the artwork for screen printing.

April will walk you through the steps of reducing the number of colours without losing the watercolour aesthetic, using a process in Photoshop called 'Indexing Colours'. She will show you how to use this technique to create quick and effective colourways to wow your clients, and lastly how to make the all important colour separations for screen printing.

This course is for you if:

  • If you are interested in Textile Design or Surface Pattern Design
  • You want to know how to simply and quickly reduce the number of colours in your artwork
  • You have hand-painted designs which need to be screen printed with a limited number of colours
  • You want a quick way to create new colourways and colour options
  • You are a screen printer and would love to try new techniques
  • or you simply love Adobe Photoshop and love learning new techniques!

This course is the third in the series of classes teaching Textile Design Techniques.

  1. The first class: Textile Design Part 1 - The Placement Print
  2. The second class: Textile Design Part 2: Create a Halfdrop Repeating Pattern in Photoshop.

What you will learn:

This 23 minute class teaches techniques for how to prepare complex artwork, especially hand-painted designs for screen printing. It will teach you techniques for 'indexing' your artwork and reducing the number of colours within it (after all - each colour is a separate screen in screen printing, and too many colours in a design can make it costly to print).

April will show you how to create new colourways from an Indexed design. This is useful if you want a quick and simple way to transform older designs with a fresh new colour palette.

And lastly, how to create the black and white colour separations needed to expose the screens for screen printing.

This class is perfect for newbie designers, illustrators and anyone who loves exploring Photoshop. It is also prefect for screen printers and people interested in print design. An understanding of Adobe Photoshop would be advantageous, but fear not, April will walk you through each step.
