Course Description

Overview

This session will increase participants' knowledge of terms related to sex, gender, and sexual orientation. In addition, participants will understand how the dynamics of oppression impact the safety and quality of healthcare for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals. Relating to LGBTQ patients with respect and knowledge will allow UChicago Medicine to better serve our patients and communities.

Syllabus

After this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Define terms related to sex, gender, and sexual orientation;
  • Describe regulatory expectations for healthcare institutions in the United States related to serving LGBTQ patients;
  • Describe how the dynamics of oppression impact the safety and quality of healthcare for LGBTQ individuals;
  • Discuss how to communicate with cultural sensitivity, including using correct names and pronouns,
  • Identify the importance of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) information.
