Course Description

Overview

Digital Fashion Innovation is a collaboration between Parsons School of Design at The New School and The Digital Fashion Group Academy. In this specialization, we examine the revolution of the fashion industry as it has set course towards a more digital and sustainable future. Through three different courses, you will not only look creatively at the ways technology can combat industry-wide challenges in fashion, but actively explore avenues to join the effort to create a more ethical fashion future. This specialization is designed for fashion professionals who are embracing the Digital Transformation of society and digitalization in fashion and want to play a part in it. A background of at least 2 years of experience working in the fashion industry with a focus in the fields of design, buying, production, marketing, or education is recommended.

    Digital Fashion Industry is a collaboration between Parsons School of Design at The New School and The Digital Fashion Group Academy. This course explains how digital technologies have the potential to dramatically impact and positively improve the fashion industry by creating a more sustainable digital ecosystem. You will explore the role of the consumer as they demand a shift towards more ethically sourced products and brands, focusing on how this transformation happens through the support of a transparent supply chain during the design, manufacturing, and distribution of textiles and garments. Then, you will examine how blockchain technology has the potential to address industry concerns such as counterfeiting, environmental impact, and tracking and verification of goods. Throughout the course, you will learn how important Artificial Intelligence (AI) is in automating the fashion industry and how it is changing the way products move from businesses to consumers. At the end of the course, you will craft a Digital Fashion Mission Statement and construct a mind map of the key knowledge you have gained about digitization and Digital Transformation.

This course teaches you to recognize the significance of the digital revolution in historical and present-day contexts and how it relates to the fashion industry’s ability to use technology creatively and collaboratively. Digital Fashion Mindset teaches you to recognize the significance of the digital revolution in historical and present-day contexts and how it relates to the fashion industry’s ability to use technology creatively and collaboratively. In this course, you will learn about the effects of the Industrial Revolution and its impact on the automation of textile production, which allowed the commercial sale of clothing. You will examine the digital revolution and how data collection and smart devices have changed the climate of fashion in all aspects of business. You will discuss key players in the industry who have adopted the digital mindset and how they embrace 3D software to minimize waste, reinvent sustainable production processes, and decrease costly physical labor. Throughout the course, you will see the effects the digital world and digital empowerment have on fashion, and the way it is redefining the industry for designers, entrepreneurs, and consumers. At the end of the course, you will use the knowledge you have gained into the digital mindset to create a compelling Digital Fashion Mindset Vision Statement and develop your own approach to digitalization by comparing the potential of digitalization in your own practice.

This course explores how to remove the boundaries between the physical and digital worlds to create a hybrid, taking an interactive approach to consumer engagement. You will learn how designers are using powerful tools to blend the physical and digital worlds to address the fashion industry’s major challenges. Examine the rise of the fashion avatar, their increasing use in fashion e-commerce, and their role in waste prevention and quality testing. Then, you will explore the Metaverse and how it challenges designers to reach beyond real-world design. Throughout this course, you will analyze the impact of technology in the fashion industry and how it can enhance customer-centric development and distribution processes throughout the industry. At the end of the course, you will craft your personal Digital Fashion Reality Manifesto that sets and clarifies your intentions so they can be easily understood by others.
