The sports industry is one of the most exciting industries in the world to work in. From event management to sports marketing to sports analytics, this program will touch on all aspects of the business side of sports. To work on the business side of sports it requires a blend between sports management and business administration education, which is the platform this certificate is built on!
Millions of people engage with professional sports and other sports organizations on a daily basis, and many dream of working in the industry. This professional certificate program will teach you about the inner workings of the sports industry and skills needed to work in specific areas of the sports industry. Successful learners will come away with a foundational understanding of the sport industry as a whole.
You will learn what makes the sports industry unique, and how successful sport-business professionals operate. The program will introduce you to specific skills in sales and data-driven decision making, both of which are critical in the sport industry.

Course 1: Sport Business Foundations
Kick off your career in sport management. This course explores the variety of career pathways within sport management and will help you identify your personal strengths. Discover real job opportunities and learn how to network with professionals in the field – this is where you break into the industry.
Course 2: Sales in Sport Business
As a successful sales executive, you can help fans become part of the experience, both in the stadium and out. Learn key sales and revenue generation strategies from professionals within the sports industry, which is valued at more than $500 billion this year.
Course 3: Sport Analytics: Data Driven Decision Making
In sports, gut instincts are great but data analytics are necessary. Learn how to use data, facts, and metrics to identify problems, make informed decisions and propose innovative solutions to guide strategic business decisions in the sport industry.

Analytics have revolutionized sport, providing a competitive advantage to organizational decision-making both on and off the field. This course introduces best practices utilized by data analysts in sport business analytics. The course touches on sports data collection, fact finding, visualization, and metrics that guide strategic decision-making in the sport industry. This course will touch on many aspects of the sports industry, including professional sports. You do do not need a comprehensive background in data science, computer science/Python, or machine learning to complete this edX course.
Through the duration of this self-paced, online course, learners will:

Sports have long been a cornerstone to our society, but only in recent history has the business of sport truly monetized, with an expected value in 2021 of over $500 Billion USD. Ticket sales, corporate partnerships, sports marketing, sponsorships, merchandise, sports media and broadcast rights, product licensing, and other areas of revenue generation allow fans to be a part of the entire experience, both in the stadium and outside of sporting events. This course mainly focuses on professional sports organizations, rather than high school, collegiate and international sports; entrepreneurship; or esports.
This course is taught by professionals from across different areas of the industry, and provides a foundation in the principles and significance of sales and revenue generation in the business of Sport through a mix of theoretical fundamentals and real-world, practical application. It is the second of three online courses in the Sport Management Professional Certificate. The course will touch on ticket sales, corporate sales, and group sales. Completion of this course will provide learners with the essential skills and critical thinking to become successful sales executives in the field of Sport, and verified track learners are able to complete graded coursework and assessments to earn a verified certificate. Enrollment and completion of all three courses with a passing grade is required to earn the Sport Business Management Professional Certificate.
(This course is not a standalone sport management program, part of a sports management major, or sport management degree program, including an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree, and currently cannot be transferred for University of Alaska Fairbanks credit hours or accreditation.)

Most people want to work in a career they are passionate about which is what draws many people to the highly competitive field of sport business, or what is commonly known as sports management. This course is rooted in traditional business foundations as they apply to the sport business realm and is taught by professionals who are all working in, or have worked in, the sport business field in connection to sports teams, sporting events, and athletic administration.
This course is an introduction to career opportunities and pathways, professional development, and opportunities within the sport management field, and is the first course in a professional certificate in sport business management. (It is not, however, a standalone sport management program or sports management degree program.)
Course participants will learn about the complexity and intricacies within the landscape of the sports industry. Professional Sports, International sport, collegiate sport, and interscholastic sport will all be covered. Students will explore their own interests and strengths to create a baseline understanding of the sports industry as a whole and set the stage for a career path to sports management jobs such as sports agents, account managers, public relations, event coordinators, marketing managers, operations managers, sales representatives, athletic directors and more.
