Sirius: New Bright Lights for Science from the Southern Hemisphere
Offered By: APS Physics via YouTube
Course Description
Overview
Explore the groundbreaking advancements in synchrotron radiation technology and its impact on scientific research across various fields in this 1 hour 30 minute conference talk by Prof. Harry Westfahl, Director of the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS). Delve into the history of synchrotron light sources in Latin America, from the second-generation UVX to the cutting-edge fourth-generation Sirius. Discover how the new 3-GeV storage ring, based on a Multi-Bend Achromat (MBA) magnet lattice, dramatically increases brightness and source coherence, opening up new research possibilities at previously inaccessible spatiotemporal scales. Learn about the fourteen planned beamlines and their capabilities in scattering, imaging, and spectroscopy, spanning length scales from centimeters to angstroms. Gain insights into the potential scientific opportunities this advanced infrastructure offers for exploring biological, hierarchical, and condensed matter systems, and understand how Sirius is ushering in a new era for Latin American science.
