Offered By: Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies DIAS via YouTube
Course Description
Overview
Explore the fascinating world of seismology in this underground lecture recorded in Mitchelstown Cave. Join seismologists Chris Bean and Martin Möllhoff from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) as they delve into the constant vibrations beneath our feet. Discover how sensitive earthquake detectors capture these imperceptible tremors and listen to audible versions of seismic data played back inside the cave. Learn about different types of ground motions, compare distant large earthquakes to smaller local ones, and uncover other signals detected by the cave's seismic station. Part of the Samhain agus Science festival, this unique presentation brings together scientific inquiry and Celtic history, making complex topics accessible and engaging for a general audience.
