FloodSENS – Smart Sensing of Floods
Offered By: Alan Turing Institute via YouTube
Course Description
Overview
Explore the innovative FloodSENS algorithm for rapid flood mapping using optical satellite data in this informative talk. Learn how Machine Learning and supervised segmentation techniques are employed to complement SAR-based flood mapping, addressing its limitations in urban and densely vegetated areas. Discover the use of Sentinel-2 optical data alongside auxiliary information, including DEMs, slope data, and advanced hydrologic indices like TWI. Delve into the challenges faced during development, such as achieving transferability across diverse geographic regions and reconstructing flood information under partial cloud cover. Gain insights into the partnership between RSS-Hydro and ESA's InCubed program, and understand the potential applications of FloodSENS in humanitarian disaster relief and the global (re)insurance market.
