Sex and Gender Minority Inclusion in Research - Equity in Biomedicine Seminar 2023
Offered By: Broad Institute via YouTube
Course Description
Overview
Attend a seminar on sex and gender minority inclusion in biomedical research, presented by Nasa Sinnott-Armstrong, Assistant Professor at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. Explore the challenges faced by sexual and gender minority (SGM) communities in precision medicine research, including underrepresentation, funding limitations, and barriers to participation. Examine issues such as inadequate reporting practices, failure to collect sexual orientation and gender data, and the need for improved understanding of sex and gender complexities. Learn about the importance of community-driven recruitment efforts, particularly for individuals with multiple marginalized identities. Discover how thoughtful inclusion of SGM people in research can help reduce health disparities. Gain insights into Sinnott-Armstrong's work on genotype-phenotype mapping and modeling of gene-environment interactions, with a focus on cardiometabolic and pulmonary diseases. This seminar is part of the Equity in Biomedicine Seminar Series, which aims to foster discussions about equity and inspire reflection on the social impact of biomedical research.
