Aristotle's Criticism of Democritus' Continuum
Offered By: Schmid College, Chapman University via YouTube
Course Description
Overview
Explore a comprehensive lecture on Aristotle's critique of Democritus' concept of the continuum, presented by Dr. Giovanna Giardina from the University of Catania. Delve into the historical development of the continuum theory, examining the contributions of Presocratic philosophers and the pivotal role of Democritus in shaping Aristotle's own ideas. Analyze Aristotle's simultaneous examination of Eleatic and Atomist theories in De generatione et corruptione I 8, and understand the reasons behind Democritus' view of natural bodies and motion as continuous. Investigate the errors Aristotle attributed to Democritus and explore Aristotle's proposed solutions. This in-depth seminar, part of the Orange County Inland Empire (OCIE) Seminar series in History and Philosophy of Mathematics, offers a unique opportunity to engage with complex philosophical concepts and their historical context.
