Reading Politics of the Supposedly Neutral
Offered By: media.ccc.de via YouTube
Course Description
Overview
Explore the political implications of seemingly neutral algorithms in this thought-provoking conference talk. Examine three algorithmic systems that embody various class interests: a population ecology model suggesting socialist revolution as a solution to civilizational collapse, a labor supply formula reducing workers to lazy drones, and the potential for advertising on Wikipedia. Delve into the HANDY model, which pairs environmental resource consumption with class conflict, and interact with an explorer tool to understand its implications. Analyze a capitalist formula for labor supply and its assumptions about worker motivation. Consider the ethical dilemma of introducing advertising to Wikipedia and its potential consequences for the free-open movement. Challenge your perceptions of algorithmic neutrality and engage in critical thinking about the societal impact of these systems.
