Human-Centered Design for Work at a Distance
Offered By: The University of British Columbia via edX
Course Description
Overview
Many of us have had to face a new reality of working at a distance, requiring us to take new approaches to how we work, and adapt the products and services our organizations offer. As distributed work continues to rise in popularity, there are already signs that these changes may lead to a “new normal”. Facebook, Twitter and Shopify are among several companies who are moving the majority of their workforces online, permanently.
Working remotely has many benefits, including increased employee productivity and satisfaction. Yet, it is not without its challenges: many individuals and organizations struggle to effectively adapt their businesses and interactions with others online.
Human-centered design (HCD) principles are used by successful companies worldwide to transform thinking and inspire innovation. This professional certificate program teaches you how to apply HCD strategies to reinvent your work reality, and support others who are doing the same.
Each module includes inspiring video conversations with guest speakers from a range of industries, including physiotherapy, game design, ecommerce, health and communications, and more. Uncover how these people have transformed their work from a distance, and apply strategies and best practices gleaned from these case studies to reimagine your own work at a distance.
Gain a toolkit of visual maps based on design processes used by the digital media, game, arts, medical, and emerging technology sectors. And reflect, adapt and prototype actionable solutions to solve a variety of remote work challenges.
This professional certificate program is taught by UBC Professor Patrick Pennefather, a strategic design expert who has taught human-centered design and scalable MVP’s (minimum viable prototypes) strategies to a range of institutions, nonprofits and corporations over the past 15 years.

To prepare you for this course, we recommend completing the free 3-hour introductory MOOC Re-Imagine Work - Strategies During COVID-19 and Beyond.
In this course, you will gain a foundational understanding of human-centered design tools, and apply lessons learned to improve your work with others at a distance. Learn how HCD principles can be applied to multiple aspects of working at a distance, and can be used to help decipher complex organizational challenges.
Each module features conversations with experts and/or novices who are seeking to adjust and re-invent their work at home. Examine conversations as a case study, gain key takeaways, and learn to adapt and apply these strategies to your own distributed work situation. You will be taught how to exercise visual thinking and produce visual maps to help frame the specific challenges you are facing.
At the conclusion of the course, verified learners will apply teachings to prototype a solution for a real-life case study.
This course is taught by a UBC professor who has helped over 50 clients from a range of industries decipher “wicked” problems and create scalable MVP’s (minimum viable prototypes).

This course builds on the teachings in Human-Centered Design for Work at a Distance: Toolbox Essentials. We recommend you complete it before enrolling in this course.
One of the benefits of acquiring human-centered design skills is that they are extremely versatile. Once mastered, they can be applied at an individual, team or organizational level, to support product design, team communications, problem solving, customer experience and more.
In Human-Centered Design for Work at a Distance: Prototype Solutions , you will deepen your knowledge of human-centered design, combine the tools learned in Human-Centered Design for Work at a Distance: Toolbox Essentials, and learn a problem-solving methodology to propose solutions for real-world people who need to transform how they work at a distance.
Continue to learn from guest speakers from a range of industries, work with, and receive feedback on a real case study, and build a case study based on a real person in your community that you could support. Initiate and implement your own design process to help improve or re-invent that individual or organization’s work/business.
