ABOUT THE COURSE: This course is designed to teach students about the mechanical systems on ship. The system includes various machinery which includes power systems, fuel handling systems, power transmission systems etc. through this course the students will know the basics of the machinery used on the ship.INTENDED AUDIENCE: UG students in Ocean, Mechanical engineeringPREREQUISITES: 1st years Engineering courses such as thermodynamics and applied mathematics, basic electrical engineering.INDUSTRY SUPPORT: Ship design /engine manufacturers

Week 1:Thermodynamic laws, work, power, energy, concept of entropy and enthalpy, units.
Week 2:Heat transfer- conduction, convection, radiation, heat exchangers.
Week 3:Turbines, pumps, their types and characteristics, cavitation.
Week 4:Marine boilers, stack gas, economizers, super heaters, draft, calculations.
Week 5:Steam engines, steam turbines, steam cycles, calculations.
Week 6:IC engines fundamentals, cycles, indicator diagram, V-type engine, calculations.
Week 7:Fuel, lubrication, turbochargers, cooling systems, calculations.
Week 8:Gas turbines, nuclear powered engines, cycles, calculations.
Week 9:Refrigeration and air conditioning systems, cycles, refrigerants, calculations.
Week 10:Firefighting, incinerator, steering gear, rudder, propellers.
Week 11:Shafting, bearing, thrust block, gear, lubrication, stern tubes and transmission system.
Week 12:Bilge, sewage disposal, oily water separator, motor, generators.
