Overview
Education in Contemporary India is about learning the importance of education in today’s Indian context. For prospective teachers, it is required to have a sound knowledge of philosophical and sociological bases of education especially in the context of India. During the course of the study student teachers will be able to understand the meaning of philosophy and its relationship with Education, influences of various schools of philosophical thoughts on Education, Identify the relationship of education with culture and its role and understand teaching in the context of modernisation. The prospective teachers will also learn about Essence of Education, Fundamental thoughts and issues of philosophy in Education, Sociological Foundations of Education and Principles and Techniques of teaching.

Week 1: Meaning and Importance of Education, General Aims of Education with respect to contemporary society, Types of Education-formal, informal and non-formal, Process and product of EducationWeek 2: Education and economic development: its relationship, education as an investment and consumption, Meaning and importance of philosophy, Schools of philosophy-Idealism, Naturalism and Pragmatism, Relationship between Education and Philosophy
Week 3: Need of Educational philosophical knowledge to a Teacher, Contributions of Educational philosophers-Rousseau, John Dewey, Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
Week 4: Meaning and Importance of Sociology of Education, Socialization-agencies of Socialization-family, Peer group, school and mass media, Culture- meaning, characteristics and relationship with education, role of school in preservation and promotion of culture
Week 5: Social change-meaning, importance, factors affecting, role of education in social change, Social mobility- meaning & importance, types, role of education in promoting social mobility
Week 6: Meaning and importance of teaching, Maxims of teaching, Devices of teaching-narration, explanation, description, questioning and illustrations, Strategies of teaching-Meaning, importance and characteristics, Innovative methods of teaching Project Based teaching, Team teaching.
