Overview

In this course, you will be introduced to basic statistics and study designs used in CER/PCOR and the ethical considerations to take into account when conducting CER/PCOR.

This introductorycourse includes 4 lectures:

  1. Basic Statistics for PCOR/CER I
  2. Basic Statistics for PCOR/CER II
  3. Ethics
  4. Introduction to Comparative Effectiveness and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research

This course is intended for anyone interested in CER/ PCOR methods.

  • Study power
  • Sample size
  • Common study designs

Basic Statistics for PCOR/CER II

  • Types of data
  • Parametric and non-parametric measures
  • Relationship between sample size and standard deviation
  • Odds ratios and relative risks
  • P-values and confidence intervals

Ethics

  • Seven principles of research ethics and their application to CER/PCOR
  • History of ethics in research

Introduction to Comparative Effectiveness and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research

  • Examples of CER/PCOR
  • CER vs. randomized controlled trials
  • Patient-centered outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
