Healthcare systems globally have buckled under the pressure of recent crises. Whether the next emergency is a natural disaster, human-caused event, infrastructure failure, terrorist attack, or pandemic, the need for effective crisis management in this sector has never been more apparent.
Gain the tools to prepare your organization for future crises in the Healthcare Risk Management: Planning, Response, and Recovery program from the Stanford Center for Health Education (SCHE). Through scenario-based learning, you’ll develop practical skills in healthcare crisis management. In doing so, you’ll learn to identify and address the steps you can take in the disaster management cycle, from preparedness through response and mitigation to recovery. Guided by experts in the field, you’ll explore the role of a crisis response team in disaster management and create strategies to build organizational and workforce resilience.

This course will teach you about the importance of understanding crises and the benefits of crisis preparation. You will explore disaster epidemiology and how to better estimate disaster vulnerabilities. You will also learn about the importance of evaluating a need for a Hazard Vulnerability Analysis and the steps involved in conducting such an analysis. Additionally, you'll learn about disaster management, the intricacies of the Incident Command System, and the role of a crisis response team. You will also gain insight into the impact of good communication during a crisis and how the crisis response team can effectively prepare for one.

The course will teach you about the value of planning for a crisis and the importance of ethics in any crisis. You will be able to understand the foundational concepts of an incident Action Plan and be able to articulate its objective. You will further explore the complexities of disaster planning and look at the ethical difficulties that COVID-19 presented in healthcare, as well as explore the considerations and challenges in disaster management. You will also learn about the importance and impact of emergency exercises for effective disaster management and the strength, weaknesses, and possibilities that they can offer. By the end of the course, you will be able to differentiate between various types of emergency exercises and how these can test an organization's capabilities, as well as understand what is needed to create an effective emergency exercise.

The course will explore the leadership principles necessary during times of crises, and how these principles positively influence crisis management processes in healthcare. You will learn about the importance of self-care and communication strategies for leaders during disasters, and explore effective decision-making and the challenges of misinformation within healthcare settings. The course will also explore the need for post-crisis assessments and examine how crises impact infrastructure, community, workforce, and finances in the short- and long-term. Throughout the course, you will learn how to integrate lessons learned into future operations and discover how to conduct your own post-crisis assessment.
