Overview
Do you have an idea for an online business but need more information, inspiration or motivation to make it happen?
This Online Business Success program will help you take your business from ideation to implementation, through four standalone online courses, focusing on planning, positioning, pricing and digital marketing.
Accessible for free on desktop, tablet or mobile and delivered in bite-sized chunks, the courses in this program provide a flexible way to enhance your online business skills.
The program will enable you to launch, market and run your own online business. Upon completion of the four courses, participants are eligible to pathway into an RMIT University Certificate IV in Small Business Management, by applying for recognition of prior learning.
When you complete all four courses and buy a Certificate of Achievement for each, you will earn a FutureLearn Award as proof of completing the program of study.

This free online course focuses on the planning phase of starting a small online business and will introduce what you need to do for clarity and action.
Understand online business and e-commerce
With so many ways to operate online, it is important that you understand what your business is and where it fits in. We’ll take you through the differences between various forms of online business models, to help you decide the best direction.
We will help you develop a business plan or business model canvas to focus your thinking on the best opportunities for your online business. You will understand how to use primary and secondary research to identify your most valuable customer.
By the end of the course, you will be ready to:
- refine your idea;
- identify your positioning;
- develop your pitch;
- create a business plan;
- and prepare for implementation

This course is targeted at learners who are considering setting up an online business and wish to understand the planning processes involved in starting an online business, through listening to others who have gone through this process, learning theory and activities.

This free online course will help you understand how you can use primary and secondary research, to identify the right customer and design engagement strategies to attract and retain them.
Understand the data and discover your customer
This course will introduce you to how, where and why to gather data and how to use it to create customer personas and marketing strategies.
We will help you understand how to develop market analysis strategies and show you how to develop a marketing strategy to guide you towards implementation.
By the end of the course, you will understand:
- who your customer is;
- how to use data to identify and profile your customer;
- how to uncover the reasons why they buy;
- and how to develop profiles and personas for your customer.

Understand pricing and costing concepts
Understanding pricing is a critical step to starting your own online business. We will explain the key drivers, helping you appreciate how price will be a deciding factor in whether to set up a business in the first place and its long-term sustainability.
This course will take you through a number of costing and financial concepts, financial documents and performance ratios, to provide you with an overarching understanding of how these documents can help you.
By the end of the course, you will understand:
- how to make practical pricing decisions;
- how to assess the expenses of a business;
- methods for understanding and analysing the numbers;
- and how to read the numbers.

Learn how to create a digital marketing strategy
If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never arrive, which is why you need a strategy to direct your digital marketing decisions. We will provide you with a step-by-step guide to creating your own digital marketing strategy, to keep you on the right track towards engaging and retaining your most valuable customers online.
Explore digital marketing tools
There are so many ways you can engage online and new digital marketing tools evolving everyday. We’ll give you an overview of what’s available and drill down into the four main components: search, content, social and email. We’ll let you try your hand at using some of the tools and help you understand the opportunities each presents, to form part of a compelling digital marketing campaign, which will get your online business noticed.
By the end of the course, you will:
- understand digital marketing and the opportunities it presents for online business;
- realise the importance of a digital marketing strategy;
- know the different forms of digital marketing and best application of each;

This course is targeted at learners who have a small online business or are considering setting up a small online business and wish to understand the principles of digital marketing, how to create a digital marketing strategy, and how to develop components of a campaign and evaluate their effectiveness. No digital marketing skills are necessary.
