Medicine Grand Rounds - COVID-19 as Immunology Boot Camp: Cytokine Release Syndrome & Prospects for Therapy
Offered By: Dartmouth College via Independent
Course Description
Overview
Dartmouth Health Continuing Education for Professionals Home, Medicine Grand Rounds - COVID-19 as Immunology Boot Camp: Cytokine Release Syndrome & Prospects for Therapy, 7/17/2020 8:00:00 AM - 7/17/2023 9:00:00 AM, Dr. Calabrese frames his presentation around three possible scenarios; an asymptomatic innate immunity response, a non-severe adaptive immunity response, and a severe or hyperinflammatory response which can result in multi-system compromise. He discusses how pathogens engage the immune response, resulting in damage recognition that prompts protection, and how mortality can be predicted based on risk factors and chemical markers such as LDH, CRP and lymphocytes. Dr. Calabrese reviews multiple studies and trials currently underway, and the most promising therapies for each stage of this challenging disease.
Presenter
Leonard H. Calabrese, DO
Professor of Medicine
Director, RJ Fasenmyer Centre for Clinical Immunology

Learning Outcome(s)
Participants will be able to describe SARS-CoV2 host-virus interactions resulting in triphasic immunopathogenesis, critically appraise data regarding the integrated immune response in viral defense, disease severity and mortality, and relate mechanisms of action and risk/benefit profiles of targeted therapies as adjuncts to treat COVID-19.
