Course Description
Overview
Teaching Piano Skills will give teachers insight into the best practices of teaching and learning scales, chords, and arpeggi at the piano.
This is a fully online course comprised of video and written materials from the following sources: Keyboard Companion, Clavier Companion, Piano Magazine, Teaching Foundational Technique, Inspiring Artistry, From the Artist Bench, and webinars.
This is a self-guided microcourse. Questions at the conclusion of each session serve as a way to reflect on the material in the session as well as your own teaching and performing experiences. You will not respond to these questions on the platform, but you may wish to complete the activities for your own personal use.
Syllabus
- Beginning Scales
- This session will cover scales finger independence, and thumb techniques.
- Chords and Arpeggios
- This session covers chords, arpeggios, and teaching fluent chord reading.
- Scale Routines
- This session covers teaching scale routines, double-thirds scales, chords and scales beyond major and minor, and fingering.
- Two-Octave Scales
- This session will cover minor scales with Marvin Blickenstaff, and teaching two-octave scales with Scott McBride Smith.
