Course Description
Overview
Teaching Jazz at the Piano offers teachers practical pedagogy around five elements of teaching jazz: Articulation, Chord Symbols, Listening, Comping, and Improvisation.
This is a fully online course comprised of video and written materials from the following sources: Keyboard Companion, Clavier Companion, Piano Magazine, Teaching Foundational Technique, Inspiring Artistry, From the Artist Bench, and webinars.
This is a self-guided microcourse. Questions at the conclusion of each session serve as a way to reflect on the material as well as your own teaching and performing experiences. You will not respond to these questions on the platform, but you may wish to complete the activities for your own personal use.
Syllabus
- Comping
- This session will cover comping chords, accompanying, "boom-chicks," and waltz time broken chords.
- Listening and Aural Skill Development
- This session will cover teaching jazz as a piano lesson and incorporating recordings into your lesson plans.
- Chord Symbols
- This session will cover chord symbols, the ii7 chord, fluency in chord reading, and diminished seventh chords.
- Articulation
- This session will cover jazz articulation and syncopation.
- Improvisation
- This session will cover improvising for "non-improvisers" and early-level students.
