Course Description
Overview
Classical Sonatinas and Sonatas will explore technique, style, and character of Classical music from pre-sonatina works through the music of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
This is a fully online course comprised of video and written materials from the following sources: Keyboard Companion, Clavier Companion, Piano Magazine, Teaching Foundational Technique, Inspiring Artistry, From the Artist Bench, and webinars.
This is a self-guided microcourse. Questions at the conclusion of each session serve as a way to reflect on the material in the session as well as your own teaching and performing experiences. You will not respond to these questions on the platform, but you may wish to complete the activities for your own personal use.
Syllabus
- From Sonatinas to Sonatas
- This session covers the first movement of Clementi's Sonatina in C Major, op. 36, no. 1, and a summary of sonatinas, sonatas, and Classical period instruments.
- Style and Technique in the Classical Era
- This session will cover Spinning Song," Op. 14, No. 5 by Ellmenreich, along with balance techniques and essential components in Classical repertoire.
- Teaching Beethoven
- This session covers Beethoven and his sonatas and pianism.
