Advanced Communication in HealthCare Workshop

Course Description
Overview
This interactive virtual program will provide patient-centered training for doctors and other healthcare professionals and will emphasizes core competencies for responding to individual patient needs, values, and preferences by practicing communication skills such as open-ended inquiry, reflective listening and empathy. The program is tailored for NorthShore providers and is led by experienced physician faculty and is presented in three 2-hour sessions. Attendance of all three sessions is required to support learning objectives for all participants.
Syllabus
Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Apply the evidence base that supports relationship-centered communication.
- Demonstrate how to elicit a patient’s agenda.
- Know how to elicit the patient’s perspective.
- Define and appreciate how to respond with empathy.
- Understand communication skills to maximize the patient’s understanding of a collaborative plan.
