Course Description
Overview
The diagnoses of mental health conditions are increasing worldwide. While a significant amount of work is being done to integrate mental health into primary healthcare, there are various issues inhibiting our ability to secure the necessary resources and policies for implementing effective strategies to address the state of mental health. Having accurate information regarding the signs, symptoms, and available management options is a crucial requirement for understanding, managing, and destigmatising mental health conditions.
Gain the knowledge and tools to promote both your own mental health and the well-being of those around you on this course from UCT. You’ll explore the key facts of mental health conditions, including depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders, and learn how to approach individuals at risk of suicide. You’ll also engage in practical exercises that promote greater self-awareness and enhanced compassion for yourself and others. Guided by A/Prof Goodman Sibeko, Director of the International technology Transfer Centre - South Africa at UCT, and clinical psychologist Nurain Tisaker, you’ll discover how to become a ‘guide on the side’ to support others experiencing mental health challenges, and develop a personalized mental health toolkit to amplify the impact you can have on your community and broader context.
