In this course, students will not only learn about the five layers of risk and how to effectively perform a risk assessment, but they will also have the hands-on opportunity to create their own Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans.

What are Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans?

Business continuity planning is the process that is used to create a system of prevention and restoration from potential threats to an organization. The plan that is created is known as a Business Continuity Plan (BCP). It ensures that an organization’s assets and personnel are protected and that they are able to function quickly if there is ever a disaster. This type of plan is established in advance and it typically requires input from key personnel and stakeholders.

A Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) is a document that outlines how an organization can resume operations quickly in the event of an unplanned incident. The DRP is a key part of the BCP that is geared toward aspects of operations that rely on a functioning IT infrastructure. The goal of a DRP is to provide organizations with processes that will help resolve data loss and recover functionality of systems so work can resume (even if it’s at a decreased level) after the incident.

What is Involved in this Disaster Recovery Training?

In this Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery training course, students will learn the five layers of risk and the important aspects to consider when performing a risk assessment. They will also become familiar with the process of developing a BCP and DRP, including what the plans need to include, what a business impact analysis is and why you need it, and some of the key factors that cause some BCPs to fail. Students will have the opportunity to review an existing BCP and DRP, and then create their own in the self-guided lab portion of the course.

Upon completion of this course, student will be able to:

  • Explain the various sections of a BCP
  • Explain the various sections of a DRP
  • Create their own BCP and DRP

This disaster recovery course will benefit anyone who is involved in organizational business continuity planning. This includes those professionals who are responsible for information and communication technology, line and project management, service delivery, facilities, finance, and human resources.

While there are no prerequisites for this course, students will benefit from having familiarity with cybersecurity and IT terminology.

The BCP and DRP training has a total of 3 hours and 19 minutes clock time, for which students will earn 4 CEU/CPE and a Certificate of Completion.

Why Are Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning Important?

In today’s world, companies face an unprecedented number of exposures to disasters that vary in degree from fairly minor to catastrophic. Because there are natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes, as well as an increasing reliance on technology networks and infrastructure, companies are most certainly susceptible to a wide range of risks. Managing these risks with business continuity and disaster recovery planning is critical to the survival of any business when unplanned incidents occur.

BCPs and DRPs are vitally important because they are designed to help a business continue its operations in the event of a major disaster. Whether it’s a fire, severe weather, or a cyberattack that is threatening your organization, critical information and assets could potentially be lost, or significant downtime may be experienced – and that will cost the company financially. Having a business continuity and disaster recovery strategy will help minimize those losses and get the company back up and operating faster.

Being able to bring this information back to your organization is invaluable. Even if your company already has these plans in place, learning more about business continuity and disaster recovery planning may help you fill in any gaps within your current plans, or bring new strategies to your stakeholders.

If you are interested in learning more and business continuity and disaster recovery planning, this intermediate level course is ideal. Starting from the basics of what these plans are, then moving on to reviewing existing plans, and ultimately, creating your own plans, make this a valuable, hands-on training course that will benefit you and your organization.
