The development of appropriate educational and vocational guidance in Vocational Education and Training (VET) requires action strategies from guidance and tutors as a way of tackling early leaving and supporting young people in their transition to and retention in VET. This MOOC aims to contribute to this end delivering topics related to Career Guidance and Counselling in VET education, as follows: core concepts, models and function; new approaches; orientation and tutorial strategies; good practices across Europe; and the future of career guidance and counselling in VET education. This MOOC represents a dynamic and accessible tool for VET counsellors, administrators, and tutors, and it is useful for guidance professionals providing access to proven and innovative methods to enhances the educational experience and success of VET students.
Syllabus
- Innovating in VET through guidance processes
- This MOOC contains 6 weeks delivering topics related to Career Guidance and Counselling in VET education, as follows: Core concepts, models and function; new approaches; orientation and tutorial strategies; good practices across Europe; and the future of career guidance and counselling in VET education.
- Module I. Career Guidance and Counselling in VET education: An Introduction
- This week is designed to present the main concepts that will be the core of the course. Definitions such as career counselling, career education, career information, orientation, tutoring, coaching, and mentoring, etc.; will be examined and distinguished among each other to provide the conceptual framework in which this MOOC is based on.
- Module II. The function of Career Guidance and Counselling in VET education
- This week examines the relationship of Career Guidance and Counselling in VET education. The aim is to identify and analyse what is the purpose of career guidance and counselling in VET education, its rationale, benefits, and drawbacks in preparing students for employment and in meeting labour market demands.
- New approaches in Career Guidance and Counselling in VET education
- This Module will focus on recent theoretical and practical approaches in career guidance and counselling in VET education. The goal is to provide a base of analysis and evidence to underpin the current challenges when it comes to prepare students for employment and to the labour market.
- Orientation and Tutorial Strategies in VET education
- This week will provide VET educational agents with guidance processes and orientation and tutorial action strategies as integrated elements of their teaching and learning processes within a European / transnational vision and adapted to specific needs and requirements of VET educational agents and contexts. Therefore, this makes possible the adoption of new perspective and / or new action opportunities for VET educational agents.
- Good practices in VET education across Europe: Examples from 5 countries
- This Module is aimed to provide examples of Good Practices in VET education by each partner from the VET Project. Therefore, the Module will present examples of Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Romania, and Spain focusing on their contribution to the development of VET education in each country.
- Looking ahead: The future of Career Guidance and Counselling in VET education
- The final Module is designed to present and describe the trends on career guidance and counselling in VET education. The content will focus on programmes, training and models that are currently being used for career guidance and counselling practice. It is expected that this Module will also provide practical implications for VET educational agents to offer effective career guidance, according to quality standards, in the near future.
