Overview
In today's digital age, remote work has become an integral part of our professional lives, offering flexibility and accessibility like never before. However, effective communication and collaboration in virtual environments come with their own set of challenges. This course equips learners with the skills and strategies needed to excel as leaders of remote teams, emphasizing the importance of communication, trust, and relationship-building. Over four comprehensive modules, learners will explore key concepts and strategies for strengthening communication in remote work, including interpersonal remote communication skills, identifying and avoiding antitrust behaviors, developing and strengthening remote team relationships, and facilitating virtual team-building activities to increase remote collaboration. By the end of this course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to communicate effectively, build trust, and foster strong relationships within virtual teams.
Syllabus
- Communication in Remote Work
- Welcome to Module 1, Communication in Remote Work. This module focuses on the pros and cons of remote communication and the importance of developing strong interpersonal communication skills for virtual environments. We will explore how remote communication fosters flexibility, accessibility, and the potential for a greater work-life balance. Then, we will illuminate the disadvantages of remote communication, shedding light on challenges such as potential distractions, misunderstandings, and feelings of isolation. We will close with a discussion of our personal challenges in remote work and identify strategies to overcome them.
- Building Trust in Virtual Teams
- Welcome to Module 2, Building Trust in Virtual Teams. This module will cover trust-building and trust-breaking behaviors in a virtual setting and identify ways to develop a culture of trust and repair broken trust. We will close by discussing what trust-breaking and trust-building behaviors we have experienced as a remote team member.
- Strengthening Relationships in a Remote Setting
- Welcome to Module 3, Strengthening Relationships in a Remote Setting. This module focuses on strategies for developing strong relationships, building team cohesion, and developing a strong culture of communication across virtual teams. We will also discuss what actions can strengthen remote relationships and foster a culture of effective communication.
- Developing Collaboration Remotely
- Welcome to Module 4, Developing Collaboration Remotely. This module focuses on the importance of collaboration within and across virtual teams. We will explore strategies for virtual collaboration, team-building, and setting virtual communication expectations. We will reflect on our personal virtual team experiences and share best practices and things to avoid when strengthening remote teams.
