Course Description

Overview

We explore “ten things” that range from the menu of materials available to engineers in their profession to the many mechanical and electrical properties of materials important to their use in various engineering fields. We also discuss the principles behind the manufacturing of those materials. This course will contain discussion forums and be self-paced.

Topics covered include:

  • Thing One: The Menu of Materials
  • Thing Two: Point Defects Explain Solid State Diffusion
  • Thing Three: Dislocations Explain Plastic Deformation
  • Thing Four: Stress vs. Strain
  • Thing Five: Creep Deformation
  • Thing Six: The Ductile to Brittle Transition
  • Thing Seven: Fracture Toughness
  • Thing Eight: Fatigue
  • Thing Nine: Making Things Fast and Slow
  • Thing Ten: A Brief History of Semiconductors
